Frontal Sinus Masterclass

18th - 20th May 2027

Our Faculty is led by Professor P-J Wormald who has a Rhinology interest. Professor PJ Wormald is a recognized international leader and expert in rhinology.  One of his major interests has been the development of new techniques for teaching endoscopic sinus surgery anatomy and techniques. He is widely acclaimed as a teacher of excellence and is invited to lecture nationally and internationally.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

This intensive two-day masterclass in Frontal Sinus Surgery will focus on frontal sinus dissection using cutting edge 3D printed anatomical models. Our multi-material models provide different anatomical grades of frontal sinus complexity and therefore enable the participants to approach the frontal sinus in a stepwise approach. This workshop will mainly concentrate on the hands-on-step-by step-surgical dissection performed by the participants with close supervision from world renowned faculty. Each dissector will undertake up to of 5 frontal Dissections and 2 Modified Endoscopic Lothrop / Draf 3 procedures. There will be a focus on powered instrumentation in endoscopic sinus surgery  elaborating the advantages and risks of this surgical technique.

SINUS MODEL TECHNOLOGY

Our state of the art sinus models are designed by Fusetec (Adelaide, Australia) and based on real-life CT scans of CRS patients. Together with Prof. Wormald, Fusetec created a multi material model mimicking the different tissues within the paranasal sinuses. The latest generation of models provide tissue features which even allow to perform septoplasties and mucosal flaps during dissection.

The key to successful frontal sinus surgery is a clear understanding of its anatomy. The surgeon should be able to create a 3D representation of the anatomy of the frontal recess in the mind which allows a sequential planned dissection of every cell. This enables the surgeon to identify the cell on the CT scan that is to be removed and to plan the sequential dissection of each cell improving the outcome for the patient.

Therefore, it will be a key feature of the course to plan the surgery with the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the frontal recess anatomy using the Stryker Building Block Software (StrykerBuildingBlocks@stryker.com). The delegates will be able to fully understand the anatomy by analysing the CT scans and assess the frontal drainage pathway preoperatively. Then dissections will be performed using surgical equipment and videoendoscopic units provided by Stryker and Medtronic.

This pioneering teaching didactic provides an unparalleled experience of performing up to five frontal dissections of different anatomical complexity.
